My Story....
I have been involved in sport since a young age and been in pain as far as I can remember. I did my first 10 miler when I was 6 and came first. My running career came to a halt as I had achilles tendonosis in both achilles. I played rugby and football as a child and also did karate and mountain biking so my body took a beating! I was aching every day!
By age 18 I was playing rugby and doing road running! I was a really skinny kid and my nickname was ‘steaks’ as I needed a good steak! I remember repturing a disc at 18 by just picking up a rugby ball on a cold Winters night. By 19 I represented U19 Welsh Exiles in rugby and dislocated my shoulder. Then quit rugby as I decided after 6 dislocations and 2 surgeries enough was enough. Ouch! This hurt too much. I remember waiting 45 mins for am ambulance to turn up the first time I dislicated it. Then in my 20s I thought I was invincible! I did triathlons, duathlons and marathons! Yep I did London and New York and completed the London Marathon in 2003 in 3 hours 15 mins.
So I ran through my back pains (physically) cos I was so stubborn. Then had to have back surgery by age 30 (mini-dysectomy). Took me over 2 and a half years to recover and rehabilitate myself. Then I had Jaw surgery too! By the way this is the fastest way to lose weight! I now have metal in my jaw! So have been through the mill!
Here’s a full list of my own personal injuries and surgeries!!
- Dislocated my shoulder 6 times.
- 2 x Shoulder Surgeries.
- Had terrible sciatica then had…
- Back Surgery (mini dysectomy)
- Jaw Surgery
- Broke my hand and chipped bones in my fingers
- Broke my Clavicle (collarbone)
- Ruptured my hamstring
- Tore ligaments in my knee
- Lived for 30 years with achilles tendonosis
- Fractured my ankle
- Had my appendix removed
- Now undergoing major dental surgery
And had a lot of bad and good treatment! So I can empathise a lot when you are in pain as I have been through the mill and been in a lot of pain! As a joke with myself I tell people I’m partially disabled as I have had so many injuries! I wasn’t a stuntman I promise!
